Since Texas and Corpus Christi have the climate that they do, we are more susceptible to certain diseases than other places. Luckily, we also don't have some of the more serious diseases that states with a colder climate may face. Tree diseases can impact almost any part of your tree individually, or it can impact the entire tree.
There are some common ones that attack specific parts of your tree, like needle cast, defoliation, yellowing, scab and blister, leaf spot, or leaf blotch. In fact, many of the diseases seem to go after the leaves. In Texas, some of the most common that we see are trunk and root rot, especially after storms. |

Common Tree Diseases in Texas
Phytophthora Root & Crown Rot: Most commonly identified by the crown die back of loss of foliage, this disease makes your trees look generally unhealthy. This is a disease that can last years, but will eventually kill your tree. Sometimes, trees are killed extremely quickly. Young trees tend to get this disease because their root systems aren't as complex. Anthracnose: This disease comes from fungi that latches onto one of your trees. The most common symptom of this disease focuses on the fact that many parts of your tree will appear to be dead or dying. You can pull splotches off your tree or spot cankers that girdle your twigs. Poor weather tends to be one of the major causes of this, as we see outbreaks during hurricane season.
Oak Wilt: This is the disease that strikes fear into the hearts of all tree lovers and tree care companies. This is a disease that is carried by roots, which we can control. It is also carried by insects, which we can't control nearly as much. Oak wilt systems include leaf drop and a tree that generally looks unhealthy. It most impacts white, red, and live oak trees. Each tree will have a different type of symptoms that are difficult to spot initially, but will progressively get much worse.
Sooty Mold: This is a problem that doesn't only impact trees – it can impact any number of living things. When the mosquitoes are particularly bad, this is when sooty mold thrives. This is a fungus that grows on plants and it doesn't really cause that much damage to the tree. However, it is quite a nuisance and can cause problems on anything near the trees.
